Buckskin Horse Color

Buckskin horse color picture

Some horses sport something that dogs and deer have too: buckskin horse color!

This pleasant shade ranges from tan to gold. If you examine a buckskin horse, you’ll find that its golden horse coat contrasts nicely with its black tail, mane and lower legs.

The Genes Behind the Color

To know where the shade originates, you’ll have to brush up on genetics again. There are three genes you will find in a buckskin horse: a dilution gene called the cream gene, an extension gene and an agouti gene. Are you ready to learn how they work?

GeneActs OnEffect on Horse Coat
CreamActs on a bay horse coatTurns brown or red to gold or tan
Agouti and ExtensionAct on a black base coatRestrict the darker hues within black points*

* Remember that a horse’s black points are its tail, mane and lower legs. You can find these areas a tad darker than the rest of the animal’s body color.

Clearing Up Doubts

Some people confuse buckskin color for dun because both shades are tan. You can tell the equine animals apart from each other with some DNA testing, or you can simply observe their coats more closely to look for some primitive markings.

Because it only has one copy of the dilution gene, buckskin is a color breed, but not a true breed. Of course, the shade doesn’t emerge like magic. At least one of the parent-horses has to be a carrier of the cream gene.

A lot of breeds actually have members that sport a coat of buckskin horse color, and you can find the names of these breeds listed from 1963 until today in the American Buckskin Registry Association.
